New Gym Unveiled at HMP Cornton Vale
Youth Scotland donation funds redecoration of the new facilities for prisoners.
Youth Scotland has donated £6,000 towards a gym refurbishment at HMP Cornton Vale, as part of Girls on the Move participation grants funded by the Robertson Trust.
Prisoners, staff and Youth Scotland representatives attended an official opening of the gym at the Stirling prison.
The gym has seen a £25,000 refurbishment, with the £6,000 participation grant from Youth Scotland put towards a redecoration of the facilities. As part of the refurb, inspiring quotes have been added to help motivate prisoners while they exercise.
Youth Scotland has funded the hugely successful Girls on the Move physical fitness project at HMP Cornton Vale in partnership with prison staff since 2010, and the newly kitted gym will help deliver dance and sports leadership courses.
To date, 75 young women have gained Sports Leaders UK 1 and 2 qualifications, and two of the long-term prisoners are regularly involved with GOTM as peer mentors, providing support to prisoners on the programme. They are also the first ever people to undertake a Youth Achievement Award at a platinum level in a prison.
Rebecca Simpson, Youth Active Manager, said: "Youth Scotland welcomes the financial investment in fitness facilities at Cornton Vale, and our supportive grant is evidence of how we have embraced the partnership with prisoners and staff at the establishment.
"This joint working has allowed us to successfully motivate dozens of young women who, for various reasons, have not engaged in regular exercise or education in the past.
"We look forward to developing this partnership in the future to expand on the fitness and training opportunities available to women in Cornton Vale."
Colin McConnell, SPS Chief Executive, added: "The mental and physical benefits of engaging in regular exercise are well-documented, so the financial commitment to the refurbishment of the Cornton Vale gymnasium was both necessary and justified.
"It is also fitting and appropriate that our staff now work in a facility which compliments their skills and creative approach to providing fitness, training and general self-improvement opportunities for the women at Cornton Vale."
