Youth Scotland Winter Fund

Supporting children and young people in immediate need

What is the Youth Scotland Winter Fund?

Through the Winter Fund Grants, Youth Scotland is supporting STV Children’s Appeal and the Scottish Government to disperse funds to children, young people and their families who are experiencing severe poverty.

It is aimed at providing things like food, clothes, fuel, toiletries and basic household essentials that meet the immediate material needs of the most vulnerable children and young people.

How does the Youth Scotland Winter Fund work?

We are encouraging member groups - who can identify the families in your community who are experiencing poverty and struggling to meet the financial requirements to feed their children, heat their home and afford the basic essentials - to apply for funding.

Groups should apply to Youth Scotland for the amount of funding you are able to distribute to these families facing poverty; our suggested maximum amount is of £100 per child. Families with multiple children are able to receive larger amounts, for example, a family with 3 children could receive £300.

Knowledge of each family and their circumstances will determine what method of support is most suitable for that family e.g. food hamper, fuel cards, data top-ups, assisted shopping, etc. You will be expected to use your own discretion to deliver the support to the families, in the best way you see fit, in these extraordinary times.

Who can apply?

This fund is for Youth Scotland Member groups that meet the criteria below:

  • Are based in and work in local communities within Scotland,
  • Are working with/have reach to children, young people and their families who are experiencing extreme poverty,
  • Can allocate funds to these children, young people and their families by end of March 2021,
  • Are applying for between £500-£5,000+ (Please be realistic about your reach. You can come back for a further award if you spend your first allocation), and
  • Can provide a bank statement in the name of their youth group/organisation into which the funds can be paid.

Further details are available to download below in the Youth Scotland Winter Fund - Guidance document.

When are the deadlines? What happens after I apply?

There are no deadlines and applications will be reviewed on a regular basis. As long as you provide us with all the information we need, our intention is to get these vital funds to you as soon as possible, so that you can begin to help these children, young people and their families immediately.

Successful applicants will be asked to complete an end of project reporting form at the end of their distribution, with information about the number of children and families helped, the methods used, the communities reached and the difference this has made.

Where can I apply or find out more?

You can find full guidance notes, the application form and the end of project reporting form as downloads below.
